Indigenous Membership Forum
Date: February 23, 2024
Location: Held via Zoom
Hosted by CPABC in partnership with First Nations Financial Management Board (FMB), the Indigenous Members Forum event gathered Indigenous CPA members from British Columbia and the Yukon, and Indigenous allies to discuss issues faced by Indigenous professionals in the accounting field. Scott Munro, FCPA, FCA, CAFM and Deputy Chief Executive Office for FMB, and Danielle Levine of CPABC hosted the forum, and facilitated engaging discussions that highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion within the profession. The event provided a platform for sharing experiences, fostering connections, and promoting Indigenous people in the profession.
A key highlight of the forum was an address and presentation on FMB’s Roadmap Project by FMB Executive Chair Harold Calla, FCPA, FCGA, CAFM. Harold emphasized the critical role Indigenous financial professionals play in shaping the financial landscape and driving economic development within their communities. Harold’s presentation of the RoadMap Project was particularly insightful, being an Indigenous-led initiative that creates new paths for First Nations to transition from managing poverty to generating wealth, achieving economic prosperity and self-determination while enhancing governance and infrastructure. The event featured breakout sessions where CPA members discussed Indigenous issues in accounting, providing an opportunity to delve deeper into challenges and solutions for the field. 82 individuals registered for the event with 60 attending including: CPABC members, CPA students, AFOA CAFM holders, Indigenous post-secondary students and Indigenous allies. CPABC will continue to host more Indigenous Members forums in the future and is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that recognizes and values the unique perspectives of Indigenous members.
We would like to thank Harold Calla, Scott Munro, and participating Indigenous CPA members and candidates for making this event a resounding success!
