Helping others make informed, healthy financial decisions
“I see financial literacy as an opportunity to share my knowledge and skills while supporting other people's growth,” says Chartered Professional Accountant Tami Zaranski, CPA, CMA, about her inspiration to volunteer with the CPA Financial Literacy Program. “Helping people gain clarity and understanding of topics that are important to them inspires me. The more people know, the better informed they are to make healthy decisions and choices.”
Tami, who is Director of Finance and Administration at The Garth Homer Society has served as a financial literacy volunteer since 2013, notably teaching many of the topics the program offers. She recently chatted with us about her volunteer journey.
Why is it important for people to be financially literate?
“In today's economic climate and social environment it's important for everyone to have clear, concise understanding of financial literacy and how it relates to them specifically. I teach financial literacy sessions from Grade 4 up to small business owners and retirees. Each session is designed to meet a particular set of goals and explore topics relevant to that audience, whatever stage of life they are at.”
Is there a tip or resource you can share to help people reach their financial goals?
“Learn as much as possible about the goal you are trying to reach. Ask a lot of questions and be curious. There are professionals available to support you, whether at your bank, financial institution, workplace, or school. People are always willing to help. When you ask questions, you move your perspective and understanding forward.”
What would you say to other CPAs who are thinking of volunteering with the Financial Literacy Program?
“I encourage anyone with an interest in this type of volunteering to just try it – with so many topics there is something for everyone. One of the benefits I experience is improving my own understanding of topics. Because the participants are always different, so are their questions – there is always something for me to learn too.”
